What was the USA like in the 1920s?

In order to fully uderstand the main focus questions of this unit it is worth spending some time thinking about what the USA looked like in the 1920s and what made people flock to its shore to start a whole new life living the 'American Dream'. The mage to the right shows a crowd of immigrants waiting in line at Ellis Island to be examined before being admitted to the United States. Their clothing bespeaks their relative wealth, compared to many others who passed through this way-station.
